QUILTS AND FIBER ART
by Kathy Kennedy
ABOUT KATHY KENNEDY QUILTS
I have enjoyed working with colorful fabrics since my mother taught me to sew when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I have been sewing all my life but always wanted to make quilts. We didn't have many old family quilts, but I have always been drawn to them, amazed by the tiny hand stitches, imagining what the quilter was thinking or experiencing as she stitched.
I made a bed size quilt on my home sewing machine many years ago and realized how time consuming this hobby was. Being a working mother with two children, I told myself that when I was an “old lady” I would make quilts! Although I don't really think of myself as an “old lady,” after I retired I made several quilts for friends and family and have begun to sell quilts as well as take on commission work.
I recently decided to challenge myself to try something different – art quilts! What I have discovered is that this experience has opened up my artistic expression in a way I never thought possible. I plan to continue exploring and expressing myself through quilting and learning new techniques because it makes me very happy!
